Digital Dilemma: Telepractice Offers Pandemic Lifeline for Social Services, Not Long-Term Solution

A Southern Cross University study has revealed that telepractice has enabled more people to access critical services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Telepractice has removed barriers for social workers and their clients which has helped those who can be anxious about seeking support. Those with social anxiety, for example, found it easier to develop trust online. However, groups like those with a disability, those from CALD backgrounds and people experiencing family violence were often unable to have their needs met online.

Digital literacy and communication can impact the effectiveness of telepractice. It’s important that we remember, for a large portion of the Australian public, telehealth is not a viable long-term solution.
