The Digital Literacy Foundation is committed to enabling, empowering, and engaging our volunteers, who are the beating heart of the organisation. We recognise that none of the Digital Literacy Foundation’s work could happen without our volunteers, who help us combat digital and social exclusion, alleviating the isolation and loneliness of vulnerable seniors in our community.

What we look for

We seek volunteers who are trustworthy and respectful, and who have compassion, patience, and excellent communication skills – the ability to actively listen is essential! While previous work or volunteer experience in the aged care sector is not required, our volunteers must have a genuine interest in connecting with vulnerable seniors, and be able to meet the requirements we put in place to ensure their safety.

Application Process

Becoming a volunteer with the Digital Literacy Foundation means becoming a member of a network of passionate, dedicated individuals working to make a positive difference to the lives of isolated seniors. You will make friends, learn new skills, expand your network, and gain professional development opportunities whilst volunteering with us.

We offer ongoing training opportunities, support, and recognition, providing our volunteers with the skills and tools they need. We recognise the time, skills, dedication, and valuable contribution of our team, and are committed to providing a safe and welcoming workplace that is diverse and inclusive. Together, we empower isolated seniors to remain independent and included in our community.

Becoming a Tech Mate

Giving people the power to use technology safely and confidently!

Supporting vulnerable seniors to be safely online is an important task. Our digital mentors (or Tech Mates, as we call them) provide digital and social support. They:

  • Provide one-on-one support to help seniors learn about technology and how to use it confidently and safely.
  • Have basic tech skills, such as being able to:
    • Send an email,
    • Surf the web,
    • Load and navigate apps, and
    • Change a password.

Where do we operate?

We are looking for Tech Mates throughout the Nepean Aged Care Planning Region (ACPR), which includes the following Local Government Authorities (LGAs):

  • Blacktown City Council
  • Central Coast Council
  • City of Fairfield
  • City of Liverpool Council
  • Cumberland Council
  • Hawkesbury City Council
  • Hornsby Shire Council
  • Penrith City Council
  • Singleton Council
  • The Blue Mountains City Council
  • The Hills Shire Council
  • The Parks, Sydney’s Parkland Councils
  • Wollondilly Shire Council

However, most of the Digital Literacy Foundation’s digital mentoring services are currently delivered in the Hawkesbury City Council and Penrith City Council areas, both of which are encompassed by The Parks, Sydney’s Parkland Councils (which serves Blue Mountains, Camden, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Liverpool, and Wollondilly Councils).

How does it work?

  • One of our Volunteer Coordinators will pair you with a Learner.
  • You may be asked to attend events to mentor 1:1.
  • You may be asked to mentor a Learner in their own home (if they are registered with My Aged Care).
  • Digital mentoring session dates and times occur on a schedule that is mutually agreed between the Learner and Tech Mate.
  • You complete an online form at the end of each session.
